Now onto the attractions that make Oregon one of the most beautiful places in the country. I am biased, of course. There is no place I would rather be (expect when it rains like it's going out of style). If you are a fan of the outdoors or even a fan of the indoors, Portland and its surroundings offers a little something for everyone.
The list will be long. Note: Everything we mention comes strictly from first hand experience. Trust us: we would not steer anyone wrong in our suggestions.
Pack a snack and good luck.
For the day tripper:
Mount Hood: We suggest a day be taken to hit the four best qualities of Mount Hood National Forest. Multnomah Falls. Columbia Gorge. Hood River. Timberline Lodge.
Multnomah Falls: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multnomah_Falls
Columbia Gorge: Some really good spots for hiking or picnicking. A place to rest and take in the beauty. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_River_Gorge
Hood River: Kiteboarding capital of the state. Quaint town with good restaurants and coffee shops. Wineries in abundance. Situated on the Columbia Gorge. Beautiful. http://hoodriver.org/
Timberline Lodge: Atop a glacier, Timberline offers year round skiing and snowboarding. You might be able to spot some pros up there during the summer. A beautiful lodge that overlooks forest for hundreds of miles each way. The lodge itself is historic and a great place to rest or have lunch. http://www.timberlinelodge.com/
Newberg: Wine, wine and more wine. There will be a section strictly dedicated to this wonderful libation. http://www.newbergoregon.gov/
Cannon Beach: If you are wanting to head west to the coast, Cannon Beach is a great little town to stop in. The Oregon Coast is not a beach by anyones standards, but on a beautiful day, you can hunker in the sand with a blanket and read a good book. There are some great restaurants here and a great candy store, where Josh and I like to get some seafoam. http://www.cannonbeach.org/
In town:
Powells Bookstore: If you like books, you will be in heaven.
Japenese Gardens: A beautiful and peaceful place to walk in and take "it" all in.
Laurelhurst Park: In Southeast Portland lies one of the prettiest parks. Although packed on a nice day, you will find Laurelhurst is a great spot for a picnic. This is where Josh and I often come..he held my hand here for the first time..hehehe.
Rose Gardens: A garden full of roses that overlooks the city. Really pretty. Its right next to the Japenese Gardens, so if you want to hit this up afterwards, i would highly suggest it.
Vista House: Overlooking the Columbia Gorge, this is where Josh asked me on our first date and also where he gave me 3 pounds of gummy worms and a bunch of canning jars. It holds a special place in our hearts.
Sauvie Island: Only 11 miles of out the city, Sauvie Island is purely country. Famers markets and fresh fields of berries is what makes the island so great.
